Empowering Healthier Canadians: How Medical Laboratory Technologist Sheila Obedoza Takes The Guesswork Out of Medicine

At LifeLabs, we are proud to highlight National Medical Laboratory Week and honour the incredible contributions of medical lab professionals and the teams that support them in empowering healthier Canadians. Follow along as we share inspiring stories of how our expertise and care provide reassurance and insights for patients.

In today’s story, we’re profiling Medical Laboratory Technologist Sheila Obedoza, who exemplifies how her work as a “behind-the-scenes detective” ensures that doctors get a clear picture of every patient’s diagnosis.

As a behind-the-scenes member of the LifeLabs team, Sheila knows that her role is to empower healthier Canadians by bringing precision, accuracy, and care to every test she runs. By examining stool samples and looking for intestinal parasites, Sheila enables healthcare providers to take action.

“I’m always aware that my results help healthcare providers make fast and correct decisions for patient care,” said Sheila. “Even though I don’t see the patients, I always remember that every sample I test belongs to someone who’s counting on me to get it right, I know my work is critical to their diagnosis and treatment.”

These results are more than just information – they advance patient care by enabling healthcare providers to act. For example, two patients may come in with identical symptoms. But when their swabs are tested in the lab, one tests positive for COVID-19, and the other for Influenza A.

These results completely change how each patient would be treated and take the guesswork out of medicine.

Indeed, healthcare providers rely on LifeLabs for 70 per cent of the diagnoses and treatment plans they build, based on the results we deliver every single day.

Sheila recalls a situation in which a batch of samples needed to be processed. These tests wouldn’t just support the individual patients – they would determine if a long-term care home had to be locked down. Sheila and her team demonstrated agility by releasing a report within hours.

“I remember standing outside after my shift ended and thinking, ‘This mattered today.’ It wasn’t just data — it was protecting vulnerable lives, reuniting families sooner, and helping decision-makers act fast,” said Sheila.

Stay tuned for more stories from our team members this Med Lab Week, as we continue to empower Canadians to take control of their health and make informed decisions.
