Empowering Healthier Canadians: Honouring Med Lab Week Through Art

At LifeLabs, we are proud Canadians, serving Canadians from coast to coast. In the “Empowering Healthier Canadians” story series, we showcase the inspiring voices of our team members as they share what fuels their passion for serving Canadian communities, advancing healthcare, and embracing innovative technologies.

In today’s story, we’re profiling Medical Lab Technologist Zahra Motiei-Najafi, who was inspired to create a beautiful painting in honour of National Medical Laboratory Week.

From April 13th to 17th, LifeLabs was proud to host Med Lab Week celebrations and celebrate the behind-the-scenes professionals whose dedication ensures that patients receive accurate, timely results that guide diagnoses, inform treatment, and empower healthier lives.

Zahra was proud to be a part of the celebrations.

“I’m happy to be part of the Microbiology team. We have an incredible environment, and we always support each other while leading with teamwork and agility,” said Zahra.

As Med Lab Week unfolded, this event inspired her to create a painting that showcased the themes of Med Lab Week, and how the collective strength of LifeLabs reflects the beauty, health and confidence of a swan.

Swan Painting

Peace, Strength and Dignity by Zahra Motiei-Najafi

Swans have long been admired for their grace and beauty, but in many cultures, they are also seen as a good-luck charm, with their presence signaling positive change to come. It was this symbolism that led Zahra to connect her art with Med Lab Week.

“Med Lab Week was full of incredibly happy and heart-warming moments,” said Zahra. “I’m grateful for my colleagues and how they came together. This week left me feeling energized.”

While painting may not be part of how she typically empowers healthier Canadians, Zahra’s art represents her deep understanding of LifeLabs’ mission and purpose. These principles guide her work, as she always remembers that every sample is a mother, father, brother, or son waiting for their results.

“Zahra’s commitment to putting patients first is exemplary,” said Eufrecina Inocencio, Supervisor Laboratory Operations. “It is a pleasure having Zahra as part of the team, and I always look forward to working with her.”

As Zahra reflects on Med Lab Week, one message stands out.

“Med Lab Week is a wonderful event in the world. My art is linked to this week by representing strength, inspiration, and confidence in life and work,” said Zahra.
