Empowering Healthier Canadians: A Legacy of Care Passed from Mother to Daughter

At LifeLabs, we are proud Canadians, serving Canadians from coast to coast. In the “Empowering Healthier Canadians” story series, we showcase the inspiring voices of our team members as they share what fuels their passion for serving Canadian communities, advancing healthcare, and embracing innovative technologies.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, we’re profiling Alice Siby, Lab Technician and Anea Malile, Supervisor, Lab Operations, and exploring how this mother-daughter duo exemplifies LifeLabs’ commitment to high-quality service while empowering each other and our communities.

Alice started working at LifeLabs in 2008, and her impact in empowering Canadians’ health journeys inspired her daughter, Anea, to follow a similar path. Seeing her mom’s dedication and expertise led Anea to switch university programs and enroll in the Medical Laboratory Science program at Ontario Tech University. In 2018, while completing her studies, Alice encouraged Anea to become a summer intern at LifeLabs.

“This opportunity gave me valuable experience early on and ultimately shaped my career,” said Anea. “It allowed me to grow towards leadership.”

Since starting as a student, Anea has grown in her career to her current role as Supervisor, Lab Operations in the molecular lab, empowering those around her to make a difference while delivering vital results for Canadians.

“I’m especially proud of Anea for the way she has used each opportunity to grow and build her career path,” said Alice.

One moment that stood out for both of them was when Anea and Alice worked together during a shift away from traditional screening methods. They were both closely involved in this change, with Alice contributing from the cytology side and Anea from the molecular side.

“Being involved in different aspects of the same advancement made us feel more connected to each other and to LifeLabs’ mission,” said Anea.
