We’re pleased to share LifeLabs is partnering with Klinrisk1 to exclusively offer an algorithm-based test tool for risk stratification of kidney failure progression at early stages of CKD for at risk patients.
The Klinrisk algorithm is a machine learning model based on results from routine blood and urine tests.2 It generates a score for every patient with CKD, helping guide decisions about referrals, treatments, and goals of care, ultimately helping to reduce the risk of developing end-stage renal disease. This algorithm is the next generation solution for prognosis in kidney disease, built on a foundation of lab data from large national and international population health repositories with published complete data from health care systems. It predicts the progress of kidney disease before kidney function is lost. Complementing the Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE)3, Klinrisk equips health care providers with a powerful tool that assesses the risk of CKD progression so that patients at risk can reduce their chances of developing end-stage kidney disease.
We will be offering Klinrisk as a private pay test ($65) in Ontario by the end of November 2023. Results are provided within 8-10 business days once sample is received by the lab.
How To Order / Patient Instructions
- This test is only available for patients who are >/= 18 years of age.
- You can find the pre-populated requisition on the Requisitions page on LifeLabs.com
- The following 16 laboratory tests must be ordered to perform the Klinrisk test: Random Glucose, Creatinine (eGFR), Urea (BUN), Sodium, Potassium, ALT, Alk. Phosphatase, Bilirubin, Albumin, Albumin/Creatinine Ratio, CBC, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Phosphate & Carbon Dioxide
- Ensure that the information at the top of the requisition is complete including all patient demographics. The Klinrisk test cannot be performed without the patient’s date of birth and sex.
- Your patient can visit any LifeLabs patient service centre to have their sample collected.
- Please note we will require information such as date of birth, and sex at birth, to do this test.
- Patient should not fast for this test.
- Patient will be required to provide a urine sample, in addition to blood sample.
Test Reports
Each test report will provide the individual patient’s risk score, along with a clinical decision support. The following reference ranges should be noted when reviewing test results:
- Low Risk Score: 0 to 5 % risk over 5 years
- Medium Risk Score: 6 to 24 % risk over 5 years
- High Risk Score: 25+ % risk over 5 years
As a reminder, eGFR and albuminuria are essential for diagnosis and staging in CKD, and should be part of screening and ongoing management. Klinrisk test provides prognostic information beyond eGFR and albuminuria , and identifies patients who are at risk of kidney disease progression.
