What is Panorama™ NIPT?

Panorama™ NIPT is a highly accurate prenatal screening test which uses a blood sample from the pregnant individual to analyze DNA from the placenta* to screen for common chromosome conditions that could affect a baby’s health.
Panorama™ is the only NIPT that can tell the difference between the pregnant individual’s and the baby’s DNA resulting in higher accuracy.
Panorama™ carries no risk of miscarriage and reduces unnecessary invasive procedures like CVS and amniocentesis.
Panorama™ NIPT is available through a simple, convenient blood draw for pregnant individuals at LifeLabs and partnered locations.
Panorama™ results are available to your ordering healthcare provider within 7-10 days of being received at the Ontario Genetics Laboratory.
Panorama™ results are available for patients through LifeLabs’ online portal 5 calendar days after the report is released to the ordering health care provider.

How to order Panorama™ NIPT?

You can pay for Panorama™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) testing online. By clicking the pay for test button, you will be taken to the LifeLabs e-commerce store where you will be able to select the version of Panorama you are interested in. Please select Ontario or British Columbia depending on your province.

Midwives, nurse practitioners and physicians can sign your requisition form. Unsigned requisitions will NOT be accepted at any LifeLabs location.

If your healthcare provider has already given you a signed paper requisition, please bring it directly to a LifeLabs location to pay and complete your testing.

If you have paid online, please provide proof of payment at the time of sample collection.
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing requires a blood sample that can easily be collected from your arm.

Your test results will be sent directly to your ordering healthcare provider within 7 – 10 days of being received at the Ontario Genetics Laboratory for their review and follow-up discussion with you.

We recommend that you schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider two weeks after your blood sample is collected to review the results.

You can access Panorama™ reports through LifeLabs’ online portal 5 calendar days after the report is released to the ordering health care provider.

What does Panorama™ tell me?

Chromosomes are the structures inside the cells of the body.

They contain our DNA, or genetic code, which tells the body how to grow and develop.

Each parent contributes a set of chromosomes through the egg and the sperm. The egg typically has 23 chromosomes and the sperm also typically has 23 chromosomes. When the egg and sperm join together at fertilization, they form an embryo with 46 chromosomes in total – 23 from each parent. This is the usual number of chromosomes for a developing baby.
When there’s a difference in the usual number of chromosomes, it is called an aneuploidy
- An extra copy of any one chromosome — 3 copies instead of 2 — is called a trisomy (tri-meaning “three”)
- A missing copy of any one chromosome — 1 copy instead of 2 — is called a monosomy (mono-meaning “one”)
Types of aneuploidies

There are many different types of aneuploidies that require clinical care by a physician or other healthcare professional. Panorama™ can provide a risk score for the following:

Trisomy 21: Down Syndrome
- Approximately 1 in 700 babies is born with Down syndrome¹.
- The chance of miscarriage is higher: up to 30%
Children born with Down syndrome typically have some intellectual differences and characteristic physical features, and may have birth defects involving the heart and other organs. They will need extra medical care depending on the child’s specific health problems. Most people with Down syndrome live into their 60s.

Trisomy 18: Edwards Syndrome
- Approximately 1 in 3,000 babies is born with Edwards syndrome¹.
- The chance of miscarriage is higher: 60%–70%
Babies with Edwards syndrome often have severe intellectual differences and life-threatening birth defects; fewer than 10% live beyond 1 year old.

Trisomy 13: Patau Syndrome
- Approximately 1 in 5,000 babies is born with Patau syndrome¹.
- The chance of miscarriage is higher: 60%–70%
Babies with Patau syndrome often have severe intellectual disabilities and life-threatening birth defects involving the heart and brain; only 5%–10% live beyond 1 year old.

Monosomy X: Turner Syndrome
- Approximately 1 in 2,500 girls is born with Turner syndrome¹.
- A large proportion of pregnancies will result in a miscarriage in the first or second trimester
Girls with Turner syndrome:
- may have mild or more severe health problems, including heart defects, kidney problems, hearing problems, and minor learning differences
- usually experience premature ovarian failure; they do not go through puberty or produce eggs on their own
Sex chromosome: trisomies
- Approximate number of babies born with sex chromosome trisomies (when there is an extra copy of one of the sex chromosomes):
- Klinefelter syndrome (XXY): 1 in 1,000¹
- Triple X syndrome (XXX): 1 in 800¹
- Jacob’s syndrome (XYY): 1 in 650 boys¹
Most children with sex chromosome trisomies have intelligence in the normal range but have a higher chance of learning differences², for which early intervention can be helpful³.

- Certain types of microdeletions can cause health problems for the baby that may need immediate care upon birth.
- Early screening can guide the management of the pregnancy or allow decisions for the delivery and special needs of your child.
- Babies with 22q deletion syndrome, for example, have a harder time maintaining calcium in their bodies — so prenatal testing ensures doctors know they need to monitor your child’s levels from birth and supplement as necessary.
- Note: Microdeletions are present from conception and not a result of anything you or your partner did or didn’t do.

Maternal age and risk for trisomies 21, 18, and 13
- As people get older, the chances of an egg having a missing or extra chromosome increases, so the likelihood of a pregnancy with a chromosome disorder also goes up with age.
Maternal age and risk for monosomy and triploidy
- There is no increased chance of monosomy X or triploidy as maternal age increases.
Maternal age and risk for microdeletions
- Microdeletions can occur randomly in a pregnancy, and their occurrence is not related to race or maternal age. However, some microdeletions can also be inherited from a parent, meaning they may run in families. If you have a family history of one of these microdeletions, Panorama™ may not be the most appropriate test for you. We suggest speaking with your healthcare provider about a referral to a genetic counsellor.
Microdeletions are not affected by maternal age, and are more common than Down syndrome in younger women.

NIPT, non-invasive prenatal testing (also called cell-free fetal DNA testing) uses a blood sample from the pregnant individual to analyze DNA from the placenta for certain chromosome conditions, like Down syndrome, that could affect the baby’s health.

How does NIPT work?
- We are all composed of trillions of cells which naturally die off and release DNA. This DNA is called cell free DNA (cfDNA).
- When an individual is pregnant, the cell-free DNA from the placenta is released into the pregnant individual’s bloodstream and mixes with their own DNA.
- NIPT works by analyzing the cell free DNA from the pregnant individual and the placenta to determine if there is the correct amount of DNA (chromosome material), extra DNA or missing DNA. This results in a high or low chance that the baby has certain chromosome conditions.
- Fetal fraction, or the proportion of cell free DNA in the blood sample that comes from the placenta, can affect the accuracy of an NIPT test.
- The Panorama™ technology uses SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms).
- SNPs are small changes in our genetic code and are the 1% of DNA that makes us different from one another. They are like DNA fingerprints.
- Panorama™ technology can detect the differences in these unique fingerprints between the pregnant individual and the baby.
- Panorama™ analyzes around 13,000 SNPs to determine if the baby has the correct amount of chromosomes, too many or too few chromosomes.
So why should I order Panorama™ when I get maternal serum screening done through the provincial healthcare system?

Chances are, your baby will be born perfectly healthy! Most prenatal screening tests are an optional part of your pregnancy care plan – but well worth your consideration.

A detailed ultrasound is still recommended for all patients, regardless of screening option.

Ultrasound provides important information on the growth and development of the fetus.

Maternal Serum Screening (MSS)

Out of a sample of 100 pregnant individuals who receive a “high risk” result for Down syndrome via first trimester screening¹ 3 will be true positive and 97 will be false positive and referred for unnecessary invasive testing.

Panorama™ NIPT

Out of a sample of 100 pregnant individuals who receive a “high risk” result for Down syndrome via Panorama™ NIPT² 95 will be true positive and only 5 will be false positive.

Panorama’s Full Prenatal Panel includes the following microdeletions:

22q11.2 Deletion syndrome/DiGeorge syndrome

Babies born with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome often have heart defects, immune system problems, and mild-to moderate intellectual disability. They may also have kidney problems, feeding problems, and/or seizures. About one in every 1,524 babies is born with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

1p36 deletion syndrome

Babies born with 1p36 deletion syndrome have weak muscle tone, heart and other birth defects, intellectual disabilities, and behaviour problems. About half will have seizures. About 1 in 5,000 newborn babies has 1p36 deletion syndrome.

Angelman syndrome

Babies born with Angelman syndrome often have delayed milestones (like sitting, crawling and walking), seizures, and problems with balance and walking. They can also have severe intellectual disability and most do not develop speech. About 1 in 12,000 babies is born with Angelman syndrome.

Cri-du-chat syndrome, also known as 5p minus

Babies born with Cri-du-chat syndrome typically have low birth weight, small head size, and decreased muscle tone. Feeding and breathing difficulties are also common. They have moderate-to-severe intellectual disability. About 1 in every 20,000 babies is born with Cri-du-chat syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome

Babies born with Prader-Willi syndrome have low muscle tone and problems with feeding and gaining weight. They also have intellectual disability. As children and adults, they have rapid weight gain and often develop obesity related medical problems. About 1 in 10,000 babies are born with Prader-Willi syndrome.

*If the percentage of fetal (placental) DNA in the sample is below 7%, screening for Angelman syndrome will not be performed and the results will be reported as “risk unchanged”. A redraw will not be recommended and, if so chosen by the ordering healthcare provider, the cost will be borne by the patient.
Panorama™ offers patients a personalized risk score. It is a screening test, not a diagnostic test.

Your report may state the following:

Low Risk

A low risk result means the chance that your baby has one of the conditions tested by Panorama™ is very unlikely (but not zero), less than 1 in 10,000 for most conditions.
- Although Panorama™ results are very accurate, routine monitoring of a pregnancy is still recommended, and your healthcare provider amy recommend further testing depending on results of other prenatal tests and/or family history.
High Risk

A high risk result means that your pregnancy has a higher change of having a specific chromosomal condition.
- If you receive a high risk Panorama™ result, speak with your healthcare provider to discuss which next steps you could pursue, such as Genetic Counselling, detailed ultrasound, and the option of diagnostic testing.
- No irrevocable decisions should be made without follow up diagnostic testing (chorionic villus sampling/amniocentesis)
No Result
- In a small percentage of cases Panorama™ may not be able to obtain sufficient information from your blood sample to determine an accurate result. You should speak with your health care provider about the next steps. In most cases a redraw will be recommended and it will likely yield a result. In some cases, further genetic counselling with the option of comprehensive ultrasound and option of diagnostic testing should be considered due to the increased chance of a chromosome condition when there is a “no result”.
- Atypical findings on Panorama™ NIPT: An atypical finding means that there is something different detected in the cfDNA pattern that causes a “no result”. There are 2 types of atypical findings: No result for all chromosomes being tested, or no result for the sex chromosomes. There are different possible reasons that this can happen. It could be the result of normal variation. It could also mean there is a chromosome difference in the baby. Because the blood sample has cfDNA from pregnant individual and the pregnancy, it could also mean that there is a chromosome difference in the pregnant individual. When we get this type of result, we do not repeat the test but we recommend a referral for genetic counselling with the option of a comprehensive ultrasound and diagnostic testing.
- In rare cases, Panorama™ will have an atypical result relating to your genetics or your physical health.
- If sex chromosome aneuploidy was selected on the requisition form, it will be included in the results
- If fetal sex option was selected on the requisition form, it will be included in the results
- If the full panel with microdeletions was added, the risk for individual anomalies will be included in the results
