Empowering Healthier Canadians: Care and Compassion in Guelph, Ontario

At LifeLabs, we are proud Canadians, serving Canadians from coast to coast. In the “Empowering Healthier Canadians” story series, we showcase the inspiring voices of our team members as they share what fuels their passion for serving Canadian communities, advancing healthcare, and embracing innovative technologies.

Today’s story showcases how LifeLabs’ values of caring, agility, and a customer-centred approach empower healthier communities and advance patient care. Our Guelph, Ontario staff’s commitment to high-quality service mirrors the thousands of thoughtful interactions across Canada daily.

For Surrey Street Lab Patient Technician Drashti Khambhadiya, small acts of compassion empower healthier Canadians.

She recalls a recent visit from an anxious patient where she took the time to listen, explain each test step, and ensure comfort throughout the process. The result? A thankful patient, a successful blood draw, and a community member one step closer to answers and reassurance.

“Moments like that remind me how meaningful our work is,” said Drashti. “It wasn’t just about taking a sample; it was about making a difference in someone’s health experience. Behind every result is someone’s parent, child, or friend waiting for answers that could change their life.”

And her team’s dedication and compassion are not going unnoticed; a recent review of a Guelph Patient Service Centre shows how leading with care makes all the difference.

“My 3-month-old had to get blood taken, and the whole team was amazing, but especially Michelle who was kind, understanding, and amazing at her job. Thanks so much for such a good experience,” said the patient.

Just ten minutes away, the Stone Road LifeLabs team also creates a powerful community impact.

For Lab Patient Technician Jenilyn Datig, every interaction is an opportunity to bring comfort and confidence to patients.

She recalls an interaction with a patient who shared that they often faint when blood is drawn. Keeping this in mind, she took a calm and gentle approach that resulted in minimal discomfort and a grateful patient.

“That moment made me feel incredibly proud to be part of LifeLabs, as it showed me the significant impact we can have, providing accurate test results and making patients feel cared for and respected. It reminded me that behind every sample we collect, a person trusts us with their health, which I take great pride in,” said Jenilyn.

“What makes it so meaningful to me is that LifeLabs is often the bridge between patients and their healthcare providers. We’re not just handling samples but providing critical information that can impact a person’s quality of life. Personally, being part of that process is very rewarding. It means that the care and attention I give to every patient, and every sample, isn’t just technical work, it’s part of a much bigger picture that helps Canadians live healthier lives,” she continued.

For Area Supervisor Cheryl Borland, this compassion is at the heart of her team’s impact.

“I’m constantly reminded of how engaged and connected my team is,” said Cheryl. “I’m incredibly proud to lead this team, and what’s important to me is knowing that our efforts directly impact people’s lives. Working for an organization that prioritizes quality care and innovation—and does so with compassion—makes me proud to be part of the LifeLabs team.”

As they conduct their day-to-day, Cheryl empowers her team to make a difference and go above and beyond when supporting patients to ensure they have a positive experience as they navigate their health journey.

“Cheryl creates a supportive and inclusive work environment for her teams where every team member feels valued,” said Samantha Parag, District Manager, Patient Service Centres. “She’s always there to help her team, no matter the situation.”

As for Cheryl’s team, they are excited to continue leading the way in Guelph.

“Healthcare is always evolving, and I see LifeLabs playing a big role in making testing faster, more accurate, and more convenient for Canadians. Whether through new technology, digital tools that make it easier for patients to access their results, or expanding services into communities that need them most, there’s a real sense that our work is becoming even more impactful,” said Jenilyn.
