Dr. Vawda joined the Hematology Department at LifeLabs in August 2014 in the role of Hematopathology Consultant. She is the Deputy BC Medical Director and Lab Director of the Burnaby and Victoria Reference Laboratories. She also serves as a Consultant Hematopathologist for the Northern Health Authority. Dr. Vawda holds an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
She enjoys teaching medical students, hematopathology residents and laboratory staff and has completed the UBC Teacher Certificate Program. She is a UBC career mentor, site director for hematopathology residency training at LifeLabs, and serves on the UBC Hematopathology Residency Program Committee.
Upon completing a BSC in Biochemistry at the University of Victoria in 2005, she obtained her medical degree from UBC in 2009. Her residency training in Hematopathology was undertaken at various hospitals through UBC. She served as chief resident from 2012 to 2013 and obtained her FRCPC certification in Hematological Pathology in 2014.
Her areas of interest include thalassemia, hemoglobinopathy, lymphoma, medical education, and laboratory quality. Her research has involved the role of the lymph node microenvironment in lymphoma pathogenesis as well as the role of cytogenetics in myelodysplastic syndromes. She is the recipient of several academic and research awards and has been granted the Physician Leadership Institute certificate by the CMA.
